Lamp Lighting Ceremony of Nursing Training School, IPGME&R SSKM Hospital 2016-17
The school of nursing IPGME&R, SSKM Hospital was started in the year 1956 and has come a long way with its glory since its inception and recognition by West Bengal Nursing Council and later by Indian Nursing Council. This institution is affiliated mainly to run 3 years of General Nursing Midwifery course.  The annual intake of this training institution is 50 per year as commensurate with the present facilities. The academic year 2016-17 for the General Nursing Midwifery course has been started from September 2016. Like every year the auspicious ceremony, Lamp Lighting is organized today 19th January 2017 and 50 newly admitted students are going to take oath with lamp in front of Idol of Dignified icon, Florence Nightingale “Lady with the lamp”. - Principal Nursing Officer, School of Nursing

Brief Report on WB-MICROCON-16, held at IPGME&R from 21st to 23rd October, 2016
The 11th West Bengal Stae Conference of Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists, organised by the Dept of Microbiology, I.P.G.M.E&R, commenced with pre-conferenec workshops on "Scanning Electron Microscopy" and "Testing of Anaerobes" and CME on "Interventional strategies on medically important biofilms" held on 21st October, 2016.

This was followed by a Get Together on 22nd October, 2016, of past and present microbiologists, teachers, students and scholars which brought together and alowed interaction between seven generations of microbiologists of this institute who reminesced on the past glories and exploits of this institute.


The conference was inaugurated with words of great inspiration and enlightenment on 23rd October by eminent personalities, the Hon"ble Dr Nirmal Maji, MLA and President, West Bengal Medical Council and Guest Of Honor, Prof. Tamal Kanti Ghosh, Special Secretary, Medical Education, Govt of West Bengal, Prof. Bhabotosh Biswas, Hon"ble Vice Chancellor, WBUHS, Prof Manju Banerjee, Director, IPGMER, Prof Manideepa Sengupta,Secretary, IAMM West Bengal, Organising President, Prof. Prasanta Kumar Maiti and Organising Secretary, Dr Satadal Das,Organising Secretary.
The award paper presentation had seven papers was going on simultaneously with the inaugural session, which was judged by two senior teachers.

This was followed by inspiring and illuninating theme lecture by Prof P.K.Maity "Nurture good bacteria, Corner bad bacteria"; guest lectures by Prof Anindo Sundar Ghosh, BioTechnology, IIT, Kharagpur on "Molecular genetics of drug resistance in bacteria"", and Prof Basudeb Bhattacharya, DME, Tripura and Ex Prof and Head, Biochenistry, Calcuta University on "Genetics of Drug Resistance in Mycobacterium Leprae". A felicitation ceremony to honour senior microbiologists Prof. Sujatha Ghosh Dastidar, Prof Jnanabrata Sil and Prof Barun Saha Dalal was held. The pre-lunch session concluded with an interesting sponsored lecture on "Biomarkers of Sepsis" by Roche Scientific.

The post-lunch scientific session comeneced with a very interesing and interactive panel discussion " Culture of Enviromental samples on a regular basis; standard of care or a wastge of resources"; the participants being Dr Anjan Mukherjee, Microbiologist, Sankar Netralaya., Dr Anuradaha Agarwal, Microbiologist, Bellevue Clinic and Prof. Nishith Pal, Head, Microbiology, NRS Medical College.

This was followed by poster session adjudication for selection of the first two best posters on research workof MD PGTs and simultaneously two free paper sessions on different original research aspects of Microbiology were assessed and the best papers were selected for award. The conference concluded with a prize distribution ceremony with most of the prizes being bagged by faculty and students of our institute, followed by a valedictory session.

Department of Anesthesiology, IPGME&R organized a Workshop on 29May, 2016
On 29th May, 2016, Sunday, Department of Anesthesiology, IPGME&R organized a Workshop on " Optimized Perioperative Principles " in the GLT of IPGME&R. This academic session directed the anesthesiology fraternity enriching how the recent drugs, machinery and advanced technology have improved the safety of patients in the perioperative period.

Faculty from outside West Bengal , Prof Mukul Chandra Kapoor, President IACTA and Director, Dept. of Anesthesiology, Max Smart Superspeciality Hospital, New Delhi ; Prof Pravin Kumar Neema, Director AIIMS, Chhattisgarh and our own Dr Chiranjib Bhattacharyya, Associate Professor, Anesthesiology, IPGME&R presented lectures on " Optimized Perioperative Technique", " New Inhalational Agents" and " Low Flow Anesthesia" respectively.

Our Director madam, Prof Manju Banerjee; MSVP Prof Manash Kumar Sarkar ; Eminent senior Anesthesiologists of Kolkata; President and Secretary, ISA WB; teachers and PGTs from our institution and other institutions were present. A total of 80 participants attended the workshop who enjoyed the scientific feast with constructive interactions.

Programme started with Inaugural Session followed by academics. Prof Sankari Santra , HOD Anesthesiology welcomed the distinguished gathering. Director madam and MSVP sir addressed the gathering sharing their views in this field. Scientific session ended with vote of thanks.

This workshop was acknowledged by West Bengal Medical Council with CME Credit Hours.

Sankara Nethralaya Kolkata ran a camp in SSKM hospital and collected pledge for eye donation and assisted SSKM hospital in the noble venture for which they were appreciated by Sight Life Global Partner 2015. this has been made possible because of active participation by eye department of SSKM hospital. Comprehensive Breast Services Workshop on 20 January 2016
Comprehensive Breast Service under the department of Surgery, IPGME&R and SSKM hospital, was honoured to have Dr. Debasish Ghosh, an eminent Consultant Breast Surgeon of Royal Free Hospital, London for a day long single subject workshop & CME on 20th January. 2016, at the main OT complex and departmental seminar room, on various 'Techniques of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery and Basic Surgical Procedure'.

The workshop and CME was attended by faculty members and students of the institute.

It was an enriching, interactive and live session that benefitted upcoming and established surgeons equally and unequivocally.

Foundation Day Celebration 2016 : IPGME&R
The 60th Foundation Day of Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGME&R) was celebrated on 16th January, 2016. In the morning, national flag was hoisted by senior most Professor of the institute, Dr. Anup Kundu in presence of Prof Manu Banerjee, Director IPGME&R and invited dignitaries, faculty members, students and staff members of IPGME&R and SSKM Hospital.

Later, there was Ronal Ross Oration session in the auditorium of UCM Building by Dr. Siddharth Roy, Senior Scientist of Bose Institute and ex-Director IICB on Genomics and Dr. Arun Banerjee Memorial oration by Prof. Asitava Mondal on Cytopathology.

This was followed by prize distribution ceremony.

The second part of the program was attended by Janab Firhad Hakim, Minister, Govt, of West Bengal and Chairperson of Rogi Kalyan Samity SSKM Hospital, Sri Subroto Bakshi, Hon"ble Member of Parliament, Dr. Nirmal Maji, MLA and many other dignitaries. Lamp was lit by the dignitaries. Prof. Manju Banerjee, Director welcomed all and narrated the journey of IPGME&R since its inception. Each of the dignitaries addressed the august gathering from the dais. The program ended with thanks.
