Distinguished dignitaries, faculty members, students of this institute, colleagues, ladies and gentlemen,
Like previous years, I am thrilled to welcome you all to the Foundation Ceremony of this premier institute of medical education and research. I convey my heartfelt thanks to all of you for joining us on this auspicious day. This is an annual celebration to recognize our past, acknowledge our beginnings and create awareness of who we are, what we value and where we are going. It recognizes who we are as a community, our values, our ethos and our commitment to 'the public good'. So, on the occasion of the 61st Foundation day of IPGME&R on 16th January, 2017, I wish to congratulate the entire faculty and other staff for encouraging and guiding the students in all facets, for their efforts at all-round development and efficient patient care service.
Over the last few years, the institute has been undergoing upgradation in several areas. The departments of Radiotherapy, School of Digestive and Liver Diseases (SDLD), Neonatology, Urology and Nephrology have been upscaled and construction of the Trauma Centre has been completed till the 11th floor. It should be operational hopefully by end of 2017. Additionally, site development for a proposed nine storied OPD complex has started. The Uro-Nephrology department upon completion will also be the Eastern Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) Center.
Upgradation of the oncology department has been completed and outdoor services have started. A new CT simulator has been installed along with further proposals for expansion of the radiotherapy department with LINAC facilities. The Academic Building is now complete till 8 stories and will host Ladies Hostel, Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU), the Director's Office and the Dean's office along with the Students' Section. The construction of the Labor Complex and an extended High Dependency Unit (HDU) is complete in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, along with an assisted fertility unit. A Genetic Services Unit under the aegis of the Biomedical Genomics Centre (BMGC) has been initiated at the PG Polyclinic. I am also proud to present a new 750-seated auditorium, reflecting institution’s status as a premier centre for education and research. It is undergoing final touches.
On the academic front, there is a rising curve in the activities as evident in the annual report. The institute has been successfully running undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral courses in medicine and nursing along with different paramedical courses. Almost all the postgraduate and postdoctoral seats which were enhanced in 2010 have been recognized by Medical Council of India (MCI). We have added another feather in our cap by getting permission for postgraduate course in Surgical Gastroenterology.
Research is an integral part of our training. A good number of research projects have been completed and many are underway. The faculty from our college are invited nationally and internationally for many conferences and workshops. The Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) & Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Project (AMRSP) are at the stage of inception and will be
functional this year. Biomedical research is being undertaken by the faculty who are being funded by Government of India agencies like ICMR, DBT, DST, CSIR, DAE and UGC. The departments of Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology and SDLD are being supported for infrastructural development through the DST-FIST program of the central government. Alongside, the departments of Pathology, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Neuromedicine and Microbiology are also being upgraded through DST-FIST (West Bengal) and ICMR (DHR). Our faculty members serve on several national task force committees and are supervising a number of PhD candidates registered with various universities.
I convey my sincere gratitude and thanks to the Dean, MSVP, deputy and assistant superintendents, teachers, students, medical and nursing and group D colleagues, technical and office staff, officials of the civil and electrical PWD department for their wholehearted assistance, cooperation and suggestions. My deep gratitude to my higher officials of the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal for their guidance and support.
