This is the first hospital founded in Calcutta in 1707 in Old Fort at Gerstein Place. In 1768, it was shifted near Presidency Jail in its present location then known as Presidency General Hospital. It is now known as SSKM Hospital. From 16th January 1957, the college was renamed as The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research(IPGMER).
