Dr. Soma Banerjee is a Professor with extensive research and training experience in molecular biology, liver diseases, and cancer biology. She earned her M.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Calcutta and completed her Ph.D. at CSIR–IICB, Kolkata. She subsequently pursued advanced research training as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, and later as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), NIH, USA, where she worked from 2003 to 2007. She has also served as a Research Associate at CSIR-IICB and as a Visiting Scientist at Ohio State University in 2010. Dr. Banerjee’s research focuses on the role of the tumour microenvironment in hepatitis B and C virus–mediated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), particularly the regulatory impact of host microRNAs on cellular crosstalk that drives cancer progression. Her work also includes identifying early detection biomarkers for HCC in Indian patients through transcriptomic, proteomic (polysomal RNA), and microRNA deep-sequencing approaches. Additionally, she investigates telomere biology in liver cancer and studies susceptible alleles of cytokine and chemokine genes to better understand the genetic basis of alcoholic liver disease.
